4wd camping adventure including Hummer hire, into the Cape York Penisula of Queensland. This article
briefly describes some of the aspects of a trip into this region and suggests some places to visit. It is an excellent region with many places
for 4wd camping and areas of gold queensland history.
The Cape York region is considered by many to be one of the last frontiers of the Australian outback. The type
of country varies vastly from the white beaches of Cape Melville to the rugged land around the Conglomerate range in the heartland
of the old Palmer River gold fields. For this reason the region is only safely accessible by 4wd and CampersOz has a range of 4wd hire
vehicles including the Hummer.
The northern most point of Australia is the infamous Cape York. In this region are the ruins of the town of Somerset, which
was seen by its founders to become the "Singapore of the North". Somerset now consists of a few ruins but if you
are undertaking a 4wd adventure into this area then it is worth putting Somerset on your list of "places to see". We strongly recommend three
types of vehicles which are suitable for the conditions here: The Hummer 4wd and the Patrol LWB or Landcruiser LWB.
The coastal areas of the Cape York Peninsula offer long stretches of
beaches and fishing right throughout the Cape is wonderful and plentiful and the variety of fishing opportunities varied. It has been
said of fishing in the Cape area as it is simply a matter of deciding "which fish do I want?"
The western coast of the Cape York region features the mining port and town of Weipa which is the main centre of this region. Numerous aborginal communities are also within the region though
these tend to be located on or near the coasts.
The main economic pursuits of the Cape York region are cattle farming and cattle are run on very large
stations, many of them are thousands of square kilometres in size. Always take care when driving as most properties do not have fencing
(can you imagine the cost of fencing 8,000 square kilometres!!!) so take extra care of wandering cattle.
The roads throughout the Cape York area are dirt or gravel and easily and quickly become muddy bogs with a sudden rain. The 4wd
vehicles we suggest - Hummer, and Patrol LWB's - are the most reliable vehicles for these conditions. If you want absolute comfort on your
4wd camping adventure then the Hummer wins hands down on the Patrol.
During the Wet Season, which runs from November to April, the roads are often imapassable and huge tracts of land are
completely flooded as the large rivers like the Mitchell and the Palmer soak up the rains via their huge catchment areas.
Another aspect of the Cape York region is it's history and - Gold Queensland!. The lower sections of the Cape were home
to one of Australia's biggest gold, queensland gold rushes, and gold mining still happens there on a small scale today. Many of the ruins
of old towns are no longer even visible but there are reminders throughout the region - even some of the old overland telegraph poles still stand
today.
