This is
the sixth travel guide about Oz and focuses on one of the best 4wd areas - The Kimberley region in the North West of
Australia. This area is another haven for 4wd adventure travel and includes Broome, the Bungle Bungles and the King Leopold Ranges all
excellent travel adventures and nearly all can be undertaken with a hire campervan or 4wd camping andventure.
Guide 6 - North West
and The Kimberleys
Broome
The Kimberley region really starts from the town of Broome. Located right on the
shores of Roebuck bay and looking out over an azure sea Broome holds a fascinating array of culture. From it's early days as a Pearling centre
where Japanese, Aboriginals and whites worked together to make Broome one of the largest pearl producers in the world. Pearling is still a
major industry here and now fits hand in hand with tourism. Cable Beach is a must visit - 22
unbroken kilometres of white sand - though if you are travelling with children a degree of caution as the northern part of Cable Beach
is one of Australia's largest nude beaches.
Approximately two hundred kilometres north of Broome is the smaller township of Derby. Once a major port in the North West it now hosts a fascinating history and atmosphere. Although Derby is
small, a short visit is reccommended if the Kimberley is to be a travel destination for you.
The Inland Road
Heading inland you have two options after leaving Derby. You can choose to go the real inland route to take you further up
north into the real wilds of the Kimberley and travel in a standard camper van or motorhome through Fitzroy
Crossing and then onto Halls Creek. At Halls Creek is a real must see -
Wolf Crater - one of the largest meteor impact craters in the world. Upon leaving the
Halls Creek region your next stop must be the famous Bungle Bungle range. This fascinating
range of hills is totally unique to Australia and at dusk can be exceptionally eerie and yet tranquil at the same time.
The Gibb River Road
This fascinating drive takes you into the King Leopold Ranges which are simply stunning. It is
rumoured that there are many parts of these ranges that have yet been explored properly. This drive is only accessable by 4wd so it is an
excellent opportunity to undertake 4wd adventure travel. The road eventually finishes at the town of Kununurra, which was originally built to house the workers who built Lake Argyle and the Ord River Dam. This dam is
worth seeing as its capacity is 9 times that of Sydney Harbour!
Now the town supports the staff and infrastructure of the Argyle Diamond Mine which is a world
leader in pink diamond production. Tours of the Argyle Mine are available regularly.
